Alchemy – The Big Darkroom

From the first experience of seeing an image appear in the developer to the present day it still delights every single time. The simplicity, subtle possibilities and tactile nature of wet process is a welcome escape for the normal digital deluge we live today.

Our big darkroom was at one time the main black and white production darkroom for a large pro lab, it’s hard to fathom just how many images have been made in this room. Now we have the luxury of using it as a quiet, well organised space dedicated to making fine prints. We have Leitz enlargers for 35mm and 6×6 films. Devere and Durst for large format up to 8×10 inches. A large sink, archival washers and of course a drying and work room to finish prints next door.

Our most recent addition is another 8×10 enlarger, rescued from a rubbish pile. I wonder how long we’ll be able to keep at this ?
